Michael L. Cook Receives Highest Cooperative Honor

Michael L. Cook, Robert D. Partridge Endowed Professor in Cooperative Leadership, Executive Director of The Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership (GICL), University of Missouri-Columbia, was inducted into the Cooperative Hall of Fame. In an award ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington DC, on May 2, 2012, Cook joined a select group of cooperative heroes.

Cook was honored for his applied research on the role of cooperatives in the changing global marketplace. Combined with his writing, consulting and cooperative business experience, he develops educational materials, classroom curricula and a portfolio of business advisory services that have provided a generation of cooperative leaders with the tools to be more effective managers of cooperative business enterprises.

An integral part of the University of Missouri’s Graduate Institute of Cooperative Leadership since 1989, under his leadership GICL has been recognized as an ambitious, effective cooperative leadership development program. In addition to his work with domestic cooperatives, Cook has extensive international cooperative development work in more than 50 countries, serves on boards of numerous cooperative organizations, including the Missouri Institute of Cooperatives and FCS Financial. Cook continues to mentor and work with his former graduate students and visiting scholars across the globe who are now engaged in cooperative education and research.

Thomas Payne, vice Chancellor and Dean of the College of Agriculture, Food, & Natural Resources presented the award. The consummate educator, Cook used his acceptance speech to share lessons learned over a lifetime study of cooperatives and to encourage all cooperators to strive “for collective good to enhance our socio-economic lives and… to embed a higher level of civility into our every day commercial, social and private lives.”
