Dave Ramsey

Associated Electric Cooperative - Inducted in 2018

Dave Ramsey has remarkable breadth of experience including real, on-the-ground distribution cooperative experience. His career ranges from building power plants to communications, marketing and member services at the distribution level, to general manager of a distribution cooperative, to his work in member energy services at Associated Electric, the wholesale power cooperative.

Early in his career, working as a journeyman electrician in Texas, Dave heard about a job opportunity at Northwest Missouri Electric Cooperative. The cooperative needed someone to figure out what was causing trouble with power lines. Dave got that job. And he stayed in Missouri to serve cooperative members here for three decades. Dave has tried his hand at many responsibilities, from performing energy audits to designing printed communications. He was instrumental in the merger that formed United Electric Cooperative, the only consolidation of two electric cooperatives in the state of Missouri thus far.

The common denominator across Dave's cooperative career has been his efforts to help members get the most out of every dollar they spend on electricity. These savings have helped hard-pressed rural families and business stay in the black while also helping to push back the need for new generation. He gives legislative testimony, serves on energy efficiency panels, meets one-on-one with members and continually researches better ways to make wise use of electricity. He understands how members value saving a buck and getting a bargain.

A champion of energy efficiency, Dave has saved more than 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity for members—enough to power all residences in a city the size of Springfield, Missouri. Traveling nearly 11,000 miles, Dave gave more than 30 presentations over the course of one year, educating cooperatives, associations and organizations on the benefit of solar power for individuals and cooperatives. Dave helped Platte-Clay Electric Cooperative become the first electric cooperative in Missouri to install a pilot community solar project. He also helped Boone Electric and SEMO Electric define a solar implementation strategy. His knowledge makes him Missouri's sole go-to resource on distributed generation. He actively practices conservation at home—always the first to turn out a light when he leaves the room and an early adopter of energy-saving technology such as heat pumps. Dave genuinely cares about the stewardship of resources.

Dave has a passion for helping people and protecting the rural way of life. He gives generously of his time to a large number of civic and charitable organizations. His knowledge, eloquence, diplomacy, and ability to educate help to make informed decisions and have earned him statewide and national respect. Dave's contributions to Missouri cooperatives and members are monumental.
