James E. Zerr

FCS Financial - Inducted in 2008

Jim Zerr's membership and leadership roles span nine Missouri cooperatives - energy, farm supply, farm marketing, dairy, communications and farm credit. He first became affiliated with the cooperative form of business through the Farm Credit System in 1954. A grandson of a charter member of the St. Peters' Elevator Coop, Jim was first elected to the Jefferson City Production Credit Association Board in 1979 and was appointed chairman in 1983. With Jim's leadership, the Jefferson City PCA merged with others to create East Central PCA in 1985. Due to his collaboration skills Jim was appointed to serve on the district PCA board amid the agricultural crisis in 1986. Soon thereafter he served on a district restructuring task force which redesigned the Farm Credit System to bring efficiencies and interest cost savings to borrower stock holders by bringing PCAs and Federal Land Bank associations under the same management structure.

In 1989 Jim led his association further into a merger that created a larger, more efficient organization serving farmers throughout Eastern Missouri. In 1990, Jim was a member of the director transition team of the 'first-ever' merger of district Farm Credit banks.

During his tenure on the Board of the Farm Credit Services of Eastern Missouri, Jim led a merger between the Farm Credit associations of Eastern and Western Missouri creating what is now known as FCS Financial, the single largest source of credit to farmers in the state. Jim serves as chairman of the board. Throughout, Jim has been a strong supporter of cooperative education and the Missouri Institute of Cooperatives. He can be counted on whenever needed.
